BonsaiPre-production concept

Meet Bonsai.

A handheld precision liquid dosing device with single-use oral solution pods, designed around a clinician’s plan.

Explore the proposed design below. Bonsai is pre-production, not available to buy or preorder.

The proposed design

A closer look at Bonsai.

Explore the display, controls, pod, and charging port. These are proposed features, not working hardware.

The plan and status, on screen.

The display is intended to show the planned amount and device status. These screen studies illustrate individual prompts, not a live session.

The completion symbol does not confirm delivery or bodily intake.

Planned amount

Not shown in these screen examples.

  1. 01. OLED screen

    Proposed(selected)

Would show the clinician’s planned amount alongside device status. The screen examples illustrate the design, not live readings.

  2. 02. Bluetooth indicator

    In development

Would indicate a connection between Bonsai and the patient app. Hardware connectivity is in development; connections in the demo are simulated.

  3. 03. Planned amount in mg

    Proposed

Would show the clinician-set amount for a session. This is a planned amount, not a measurement of what a person consumed.

  4. 04. Battery-life indicator

    Proposed

Would show the battery’s charge level. Battery life and charging performance are unannounced.

  5. 05. Remaining-mg meter

    Illustrative estimate

Would estimate how much remains in the pod based on device activity. It would not be an exact contents measurement or a measure of bodily intake.

Patient controls. Clinician-set limits.

Three proposed buttons would let the patient start a session and adjust its planned amount within clinician-set limits. Final button layout and behavior are unconfirmed.

Physical controls

Choose a button to read about its intended purpose.

  1. 06. Dispense button

    Proposed

Would let the patient start a session on Bonsai within the clinician’s plan. There is no remote start; a button press does not prove intake.

  2. 07. Increase-dose button

    Proposed

Would increase the planned session amount only within the clinician’s limits, not allow independent treatment changes. Button behavior and the amount changed by each press are not yet defined.

  3. 08. Decrease-dose button

    Proposed

Would decrease the planned session amount within the clinician’s limits. Button behavior and the amount changed by each press are not yet defined.

Plan boundary

The clinician sets the limits. The buttons would not let patients set their own treatment dose.

The pod and its product record.

A single-use pod would hold the oral solution. An internal reader would link the pod to product information, not verify its physical contents.

Inside the device

The reader is not pictured.

  1. 09. RFID sensor

    In development

Would link a pod to product, batch, and available lab records. Physical pod reading is in development; a linked record cannot verify the pod’s physical contents.

  2. 10. Oral solution pod

    Proposed

A proposed single-use pod for an oral solution. Pod capacity and product compatibility have not been announced.

Charging at the base.

The concept places a charging port at the base. Its appearance does not confirm charging speed or a connector standard.

  1. 11. USB-C charging port

    Proposed

A proposed charging port at the base. The USB-C-shaped design does not confirm a connector standard or charging speed.

Connection

Hardware connectivity is in development. The software demo uses simulated connections; records reach the care team after upload, not as a continuous live feed.

End of device anatomy

Where Bonsai fits in care.

  • Bonsai · proposed hardware

The patient would start a session on the device within the clinician’s plan. Bonsai would record device activity, not measure bodily intake.

  • Patient app · software demo

Patients can see the plan, follow a simulated session, add feedback, and check whether records have uploaded.

  • Care Portal · software demo

The patient’s linked care team can set the plan and review uploaded records alongside patient feedback.

The software demos use fictional example data, not a live device. Recorded activity does not prove intake or benefit, and an uploaded record has not necessarily been reviewed.

External research · not Bonsai results

A label is not a measurement.

Evidence boundaryExternal research describes different problems and populations, not Bonsai study results. Bonsai is pre-production; improved dosing accuracy, adherence, and outcomes have not been established.

Product label accuracy

40%

12 of 30 oral cannabis oils were outside the ±15% THC label tolerance.

Study context

Products sampled from the Ontario Cannabis Store, November 2021–January 2022.

Scope and limits.

Small, nonrepresentative sample—not all cannabis. This measured label accuracy, not delivered dose. Labels mostly overstated contents; this is not evidence of widespread excess THC.

Current status

A proposed device. A software demo.

The patient app and Care Portal demonstrate the software workflow with fictional example data. Physical device operation is not part of the demo.

No clinical benefit, safety validation, certification, or regulatory approval is established.

What the software demonstrates

Clinician-set limits
Simulated sessions follow the planned amount and daily session limit.
Patient start
The patient starts a simulated session in the app.
Product details
Linked product, batch, and lab records do not verify physical contents.
Record sharing
A saved record remains on the phone until it uploads. Uploading makes it available to the linked care team; it does not mean they have reviewed it.

Proposed hardware design

The device, controls, and charging port remain concepts. Hardware Bluetooth connectivity and physical pod reading are in development; the demo simulates them.

Before you inquire

Questions about Bonsai.

How do AI and data collection fit into the platform’s development?
AI and data collection are part of the platform we’re building. We’ll share more about these capabilities as development progresses.
Can I buy Bonsai?
No. Bonsai is pre-production and not available to buy or preorder. Final specifications, price, and a release date have not been announced.
What does the demo show?
The app and Care Portal use fictional example data to show plans, product details, simulated sessions, and feedback. Bluetooth connectivity and physical pod reading are in development, not live features in the demo.
Who sets the amount and starts a session?
The clinician sets the amount and session limits. The patient would start Bonsai on the device. The concept does not allow remote start or independent treatment-dose changes.
Does a session record measure what someone consumed?
No. Planned amounts, recorded activity, estimated pod contents, and patient feedback are different kinds of information. None proves bodily intake or treatment benefit.
What happens if a session finishes while the phone is offline?
In the demo, the record stays on the phone until it uploads. A linked care team can then review it. Uploaded does not mean reviewed.
